TERRY FRANKS
AND THE AVALONS (1962-1964)
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
After performing with a number of different bands, Terry eventually joined up with the Avalons and the boys performed their first professional gig at the Carlton, Slough, in March 1962. EMI signed them up and they recorded several songs at the world renowned Abbey Road Studios made famous by The Beatles.
Although none of the four tracks recorded were ever released (Norrie Paramour didn't think the timing was right), the band successfully toured the UK for two years.
Initially The Avalons consisted of Colin Richards (Rhythm Guitar), Dave Thomas (Lead Guitar), Jim Welch (Bass Guitar) and Mick Sleet on Drums although Mick was to leave and be replaced by Terry Maybe. The band was originally from Slough.
Terry And The Avalons are mentioned and pictured in the book 'Shakin All Over' by Keith Hunt (ISBN 0952796104) that documents the life and times of Johnny Kidd. Pages 96 (seen below left) and 97 include comment from Colin Richards reminiscing about a gig at Southall Community Centre in October 1962 where Kidd & The Pirates were reharsing 'A Shot Of Rhythm & Blues' over and over again before the gig as it was to be their next single and practicing in this way saved studio time.
Another poster on page 100 (above right) of the same book shows Terry and the boys supporting Joe Brown And The Bruvvers at Windsor in the January of 1963.
Take a look at this Johnny Kidd And The Pirates' web site where you can find Terry And The Avalons mentioned in 1962 and again in 1963 .
