Terry Franks & The Avalons
1962–1964
Going Professional
After performing with several bands, Terry joined The Avalons and the boys performed their first professional gig at The Carlton, Slough, in March 1962. This marked the beginning of two years of professional touring across the UK.
Abbey Road Studios
EMI signed The Avalons, and they recorded several songs at the world-renowned Abbey Road Studios — the same studios made famous by The Beatles.
Unfortunately, none of the four tracks recorded were ever released. Norrie Paramour, EMI's producer, didn't think the timing was right. Nevertheless, the band successfully toured the UK for two years, building a strong following on the club circuit.
The Band
The Avalons were originally from Slough and consisted of:
- Terry Franks — Vocals
- Colin Richards — Rhythm Guitar
- Dave Thomas — Lead Guitar
- Jim Welch — Bass Guitar
- Mick Sleet — Drums (later replaced by Terry Maybe)
Sharing the Stage with Legends
Terry & The Avalons toured alongside some of the biggest names in British rock & roll:
- Johnny Kidd & The Pirates — Terry and Colin Richards recalled watching Kidd rehearse "A Shot of Rhythm & Blues" at Southall Community Centre before it became their next single
- Joe Brown & The Bruvvers — Supported them at Windsor in January 1963
- Cliff Richard, Gene Vincent, Marty Wilde — Shared bills across the UK
Documented History
Terry & The Avalons are mentioned and pictured in Keith Hunt's book "Shakin' All Over" (ISBN 0952796104), which documents the life and times of Johnny Kidd. Colin Richards reminisced about a gig at Southall Community Centre in October 1962 where Kidd & The Pirates were rehearsing.
You can also find Terry & The Avalons mentioned in Johnny Kidd timelines from 1962 and 1963 (archived).
The End of an Era
Terry Franks & The Avalons performed together for the last time at the Thames Hotel, Windsor, in 1964. Terry then stepped back from regular performing, though the friendships and memories from these professional years would last a lifetime.
